In the meantime, I found out a circumvention: using the sequence

  Esc   >  Strg+D  >  (Arrow keys)  >  F2

which escapes from text input, duplicates the current text box, 
repositions it using just the keyboard, and switches to text input 
again, such that the next character typed in will replace the marked 
duplicated text.
