Biography

Academic high school diploma 1966 Liceo Cantonale Lugano, Tessin, Switzerland

Between 1967 and 1979 study of anthropology with minors in sociology, musicology, and psychology at the University of Basel.

In 1979 doctorate on the religious system of the Yatmul of the Middle Sepik (Papua New Guinea) (Papua New Guinea) at the University of Basel. Title: “The Song to the Flying Fox: The Public and Esoteric Knowledge of the Important Men of Kandingei about Totemic Songs, Names and Knotted Cords (Middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea)” (with highest honours).

1992 postdoctoral qualification at the University of Basel with the habilitation dissertation "The Ideal of the Slightly Bowed Human Being. An Ethno-cognitive Analysis of the Yupno of Papua New Guinea.”

Since 2009 professor emeritus

1995 Full professor for anthropology and first director (from 1995 until 2007) of the newly founded Institute of Anthropology, University of Heidelberg.

Visiting professorship at the University of Vienna, 2001.

"Visiting Honorary Research Fellow" at the University of Western Australia, Perth 2000.

"Visiting Research Fellow" at the Research School for Asian and Pacific Studies Australian National University, Canberra, 1995.
