The plenary session on the morning of the 1st of September, focused on the discussion of the structure and progreess of the three following Working Groups which are considered to be essential on successfully accomplishing with major research objectives for SAMC:
"South Atlantic Index Fossil Species: Systematics, Biostratigraphy and Palaeoecology"
To maximize application, the biostratigraphic frameworks, to be included as part of the Taxonomic Iconographic and Biostratigraphic Atlases of Index Fossil Species, have to be presented per study basin, thus reflecting differences in regional tectono-sedimentary characteristics and biogeographic differentiation. The publication of a Taxonomic and Biostratigraphic Atlas (illustrating the index microfossil species), to be compiled and edited by WG chairmen, should be considered as a priority for the present activities of the participants and coordinators of this WG. In that purpose publications of the atlases are foreseen through major paleontological and stratigraphic journals.
"Paleogeographic and Paleoclimatic Maps", coordinated by Antonio J. Garcia (UNISINOS).
The data base for the paleogeographic maps, sourced from the published literature, ongoing research, and from still unpublished M.Sc./Doctorate research results (recently concluded and ongoing programmes), will be collected and plotted on base paleogeographic maps. The base maps will be made available to SAMC by Dr. Alfred Zigler, coordinator of the "Paleogeographic Atlas Project" of the University of Chicago.
At the discussions in Serra Negra and thereafter we decided to propose a Thematic Volume entitled "Paleogeographic and paleoclimatic Evolution of the Mesozoic South atlantic", to be edited within the framework of IGCP Project 381. This will comprise a collection of contributions from the WG participants, and be published through a major journal.
To make easier the compilation of data from the available literature and ongoing research, the regional studies will be organized provisionally in four main regions: 1. South America Intracontinental basins; 2. Eastern South America and Western Africa Coastal Atlantic basins (Tethyan to Boreal realms); 3. Southeastern South America and South Africa Atlantic basins (Boreal Realm); 4. Northern South America, Caribbean and Northwestern African Atlantic basins (Tethyan Realm).
Suggested time intervals for the production of the maps, which are of key-importance in the evolutionary history of the Mesozoic Gondwana breakup and South Atlantic development: Ladinian, Carnian, Norian, Rhaetian, Toarcian, Kimmeridgian, Tithonian, Valaginian, Barremian, Aptian, Albian, Cenomanian-Turonian, Coniacian-Santonian, Campanian-Maastrichtian.
"Cretaceous Continental Ecosystems", coordinated by Ismar Carvalho (UFRJ).
The undertaking of comprehensive studies of the Mesozoic continental ecosystems, tying the biostratigraphy, event sequence and paleogeographic evolution of the coeval non-marine and marine Cretaceous South Atlantic, has been of foremost importance to enhance interbasinal and intercontinental stratigraphical correlation, and is one of the kee-research objectives for IGCP Project 381. Further discussions will be carried out during the IGCP Project 381 Thematic Meeting of the Cretaceous Continental Ecosystems Working Group, to be held in conjunction with the VII International Symposium on Mesozoic Terrestrial Ecosystems, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The meeting was held at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia" (MACN), Buenos Aires, Argentina, under the auspices of the Organizing Committee of the VII International Symposium on Mesozoic Terrestrial Ecosystems, 26 September- 1 October 1999.
The SAMC Working Group meeting focused on the presentation and discussion of research data and progress reports of geological correlations for the South Atlantic Mesozoic continental successions. It was attended by nine (9) participants from two (2) countries (Argentina and Brazil).
The papers listed below presented themes related to South Atlantic Mesozoic Correlations:

APTIAN TRANSGRESSIVE EVENT IN THE CONTINENTAL MARGIN OF CUBA: REGIONAL COMPARISONS-A REVIEW.
Jorge R. Sanchez, Silvia Blanco, Rafael Tenreyro, Maritza Rodríguez & Silvia Valladares - Centro de Investigaciones del Petróleo. Calle Washington No. 169, Cerro, La Habana 12000, Cuba. Email: jsanchez@ceinpet.inf.cu
Abstract
The Aptian represents a period of an important regional marine transgression, which can be recognized in western and mainly central parts of the Cuban continental margin, in platform areas as well as in basin sites. As a result of the relative sea-level rise (eustasy) and a gradually tectonic subsidence a backstepping of the platform took place. The flooding event gave the channel facies of the Guaney Formation (Aptian-Maastrichtian) with deposition of pelagic sediments. The backstepping is clearly seen on offshore seismic to the north of central Cuba and in deep wells located near the coast in the Remedios platform.
The marine event can also be observed in the well logging of the holes drilled on the platform. In all cases an increase in the values of neutron, gamma ray, resistivity and SP at the top of the Barremian-base of the Aptian is clearly seen, which indicates a deposition of fine-grain rocks.
The scarceness of benthic foraminifers both calcareous and agglutinated forms suggests a development of anoxic or quasi-anoxic conditions at bottom. In deeper settings the Neocomian carbonates rich in radiolarians, coccoliths, nannoconids and ammonites are replaced by more oceanic facies with reddish cherts and black shales.
Regional comparisons with coeval events in Southeastern Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas bank and Northern South Atlantic were reviewed.
The facies changes and consequently the different paleoenvironmental settings occurring during the Aptian transgression were responsible for the composition of the biota. The organic-rich black shales ranging from 2.20 to 14.90 TOC are proven source rocks in the basin sites.
Introduction
The Cuban archipelago is an orogen of mid-Eocene age (Alpine) in which two continental margins (Florida-Bahamas and Yucatan) and at least two volcanic arcs were involved. These elements are the constituents of the folded belt which can be subdivided into the "continental units" and the "oceanic units" (Iturralde-Vinent, 1994).
The history of Cuba (Fig. 1) is subdivided with respect to the Alpine collisional event (Tenreyro et al., 1994; Sanchez et Tenreyro, 1996) into:
- Pre-orogenic stage, pre-Campanian:
- Orogenic stage, Campanian to Late Eocene and up to Oligocene in eastern Cuba;
- Post-orogenic stage;
Two major episodes of sedimentation can be recognized in the continental margins: during the rift (Lower to Middle Jurassic) and drift (Upper Jurassic-Upper Cretaceous). In the Bahamas margin an earlier beginning of the drift can be considered taking into account the connected displacement of Yucatan Block and South America during the opening of Gulf of Mexico.
The separation of North America from South America and Africa began in the Lower-Middle Jurassic. Environments varied from continental to deltaic and neritic marine. Sediments rapidly filled the basins and saline conditions were established probably in the Callovian. On the regional scale, the Cunagua-Turiguanó-Punta Alegre salts and evaporites of Cuba are correlated with the Louann salts in the Gulf of Mexico and Werner evaporites as well as with the evaporites of northwest Africa.
Drift phase began in the Late Oxfordian with deep marine sedimentation to the southern Rosario-Placetas-Camajuani sequences.
At the beginning of the Cretaceous, South America and North America continents finally separated with the generation of oceanic crust in the Sigsbee and proto-Caribbean at virtually the same time.
The Neocomian was a time of relatively low-sea level characterized by the progradation and maximum areal development of the carbonate shoals in Remedios, Bahamas and Yucatan.
During the Aptian, the carbonate platform was broken and the initial paleochannels with pelagic facies were developed. This is the onset of the Guaney Formation (Aptian-Maastrichtian). However, ancient paleochannels probably existed since the Jurassic from the offshore Cuba to the Great Bahamas Bank according to the seismic interpretation in the area (Masaferro, 1997).
The Aptian was the time of the first major backstepping of the platform in the north. To the south thermal subsidence continued with the development of semi-starved basins (Rosario-Placetas-Camajuani).
In the Cenomanian age, the differentiation between the platforms and the basin sites persisted and in some places the sedimentation occurred below the calcium compensation depth (CCD).
Finally during the Turonian sedimentation continued in the shallow water Remedios platform, whereas in the deeper water zones starved sequences developed. This was concurrent with continued relative sea-level rise, which resulted in progressive flooding of the platform and a reduction in the volume of carbonate production.
Coniacian marks the start of collision between the island arc and most southerly part of the proto-Cuba continental margin.
Aptian
The Aptian represents a period of an important regional marine transgression, which can be recognized in western and mainly central parts of the Cuban continental margin in platform areas as well as in basin sites. It represents a third flooding event.
North central Cuba: platform area.
As a result of the relative sea-level rise (eustasy) and a gradually tectonic subsidence a backstepping of the platform took place. The flooding event gave the channel facies of the Guaney Formation (Aptian-Maastrichtian) with deposition of pelagic sediments.
In the early Aptian, wackestones containing pelagic elements mainly composed of Nannoconus (nannoconic limestone) were deposited. Further, globular morphotypes of planktonic foraminifers (PF) and subordinated benthic foraminifers (BF) and spines of Echinodermata were also part of the association, which indicates an open platform paleoenvironment with 50-100 m depth.
In the late Aptian, the association of BF was drastically reduced and an increase in the content of PF occurred. The most prominent taxa present were Hedbergella, Globigerinelloides and Ticinella which are indicative of an open platform.
The backstepping is clearly seen on offshore seismic to the north of central Cuba and in deep wells located near the coast in the Remedios platform.
On seismic this flooding is seen as a major continuous high amplitude event dated from Great Isaac and Doubloon Saxon as somewhere in the later Aptian (Hubbard et al., 1993). This event correlates to the first major backstep of the platforms and an aggradational event that can be imaged.
The following examples show the flooding event in wells drilled in north-central Cuba. In all cases this event occurs on top of the Neocomian dolomites and dolomitized limestones of an extensive lagoon.
Well Cayo Coco No. 2 Interval: 1140-1219 m.
Taxa: Nannoconus bucheri, N. carniolensis, N. elongatus, N. inconspicuos, N. minutus, N. truitti, N. vocotiensis, Ticinella sp., Globigerinelloides algerianus, G. barri, G. ferreolensis, Hedbergella aptiana, H. delrioensis, H. excelsa, H. occulta, H. praetrocoidea, H. trocoidea, Favusella sp., Colomiella mexicana, C. recta, Braarudosphaera sp., Textulariidae, Bivalva.
Lithofacies: bioclastic mudstone/wackestone.
Formation: Guaney.
Well Gloria No. 1 (Fig. 4) Interval: 820-1309 m. cores 11-16
Taxa: Hedbergella delrioensis, H. planispira, Nannoconus s. l., Ticinella sp ., Colomiella mexicana, Colomisphaera heliosphaera.
Lithofacies: bioclastic mudstone/wackestone.
Formation: Guaney.
Concerning the Aptian platform at the base of the Palenque Formation, the first marine ingressions were observed as follows:
Well Cayo Fragoso No. 1 Interval: 3400-3483 m. cores 38-41
Taxa: Nannoconus bucheri, N. kamptneri, N. minutus, N. truitti, N. wassalli, Hedbergella planispira, Ticinella sp., Globigerinelloides sp., Colomisphaera heliosphaera, Cadosina oraviensis, Gemeridella minuta.
Lithofacies: Wackestone and mudstone/wackestone.
Formation: Palenque.
In the case of well Cayo Francés No. 5, the ingression can be expressed as a paleoenvironmental change from supratidal to a restricted low energy platform (lagoon).
The marine event can also be observed in the well-logging of the holes drilled on the platform, such as Cayo Francés 5, Cayo Fragoso 1, Blanquizal III-1, Chambas 1 and Cayo Blanco 1. In all cases an increase in the values of neutron, gamma-ray, resistivity and SP at the top of the Barremian-base of the Aptian is clearly seen and noticed a remarkable decrease in all curves. This indicates a deposition of fine-grain rocks, from dolomites to limestones with the presence of organic matter.
The absence or even the scarceness of benthic foraminifers both calcareous and agglutinated forms in many reports of Aptian intervals, suggests a development of anoxic or quasi-anoxic conditions at bottom.
At the same time, the impoverishment in diversity of the PF with predomination of small size globular forms indicates low grade in decreasing of oxygen content affecting the shallow water as a result of an expansion of the anoxic layer.
This expansion of an oxygen-minimum zone to higher layers is associated to high biological productivity or alternatively to restricted circulation with or without sea-level changes (Demaison & Moore 1980).
North central and western Cuba: semi-starved basins.
At the toe of the slope Remedios platform (Camajuani sequence), Neocomian biomicrites and biocalcilutites containing radiolarians, aptychi and casts of ammonites are replaced by laminated micrites with intercalations of black cherts and bituminous black shales of the Alunado Formation at the beginning of the Aptian. The assemblages are rich in radiolarians and PF (Hedbergella, Ticinella, Globigerinelloides).
In deeper settings (Placetas sequence), the Neocomian carbonates rich in radiolarians, coccoliths, nannoconids and ammonites of the Veloz Group are replaced by more oceanic facies with reddish cherts and black shales of the Santa Teresa Formation.
The influence of the Aptian transgression was also noticed in the basin sites corresponding to Sierra Rosario and Sierra de los Organos sequences, western Cuba.
Radiolarian cherts, shales and siltstones exhibiting ripple cross-lamination as the most common structure are present at the basal part of the Sabanilla Formation (Aptian-Cenomanian) in the Sierra del Rosario sequence. Several Aptian-Albian radiolarian species extracted from cherts were recognized in the northern Rosario sequence (Aiello & Chiari, 1995).
The Aptian flooding event can be associated to the hemipelagic carbonates and cherts at the base of the Pons Formation in the Los Organos sequence. However, biostratigraphic Aptian markers have not determined updated in Pons Formation.
Some elements are in favor of considering these Aptian marine sediments as good source rocks (Table 1). Pyrite and organic matter in well thin bedding laminae stratification and bituminous black shales intercalated in the limestones provide good evidences. In the basin sites of the Cuban continental margins the Rock-Eval analysis show the following results in some Aptian-Albian formations (López J. O. et al., 1994).
Table 1 :
TOC S1 S2 H index T max
Alunado Formation 3.51 0.33 11.64 331 420

Regional Comparisons
Southeastern Gulf of Mexico and Bahamas bank
Drilling results from Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 77 (Schlager & Buffler, 1984) show the upper part of Hole 535 contains an Aptian to Cenomanian section, alternating white to gray massive limestone and gray to black laminated and bioturbated marly limestone. The dark, laminated intervals of the cyclic limestone have some source-rock potential. Rock-Eval data from the Berriasian-Cenomanian section at Site 535 indicate a potentially good source rock (Schlager & Buffler, op. cit.). Furthermore a drastic difference of facies was apparent in the Barremian-Cenomanian interval, which juxtaposes carbonaceous shale of the Atlantic Hatteras Formation and thick limestones at Sites 535 and 540. Like the black Hatteras Shale, the mainly laminated carbonaceous limestones at Sites 535 and 540 indicate predominantly anaerobic conditions.
A deformational episode probably occurred during the Middle Cretaceous after the deposition of Lower Cretaceous shallow water carbonate platform sediments in a post-rift subsidence phase was recently pointed out by Masaferro (1997). According to this author, in the southern Great Bahamas Bank a reorganization of the stress regime affecting the Caribbean realm caused the reactivation of older Jurassic faults and their propagation into the Upper Jurassic - Lower Cretaceous carbonate platform. Some of these faults die out within the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous section without producing significant changes in the architecture of the platform. Others propagated through the entire section creating deep, narrow, WNW-striking through within the Upper Jurassic- Lower Cretaceous shallow water carbonate platform. Further north, both Andros Bank and Bimini Bank, were segmented and backstepped probably during this time as a result of extensional faulting. In the Santaren Channel, seismic reflection profiles show that the Lower Cretaceous megabank was also segmented by deep NW-striking extensional faults with throws up to 1200 m. (Masaferro & Everli, 1995) creating a northeast-facing platform margin.
Northern South Atlantic.
In most of the Brazilian continental margin, marine sedimentation started with grainstones/packstones with subordinated calcareous mudstones and sandstones deposited in shallow to middle neritic environments (Koutsoukos et al., 1997). According to these authors, in the horsts and grabens of the Sergipe Basin in northeastern Brazil, during the Late Aptian conditions were established for the colonization by shallow and deep-water planktonic foraminifers of Tethyan affinity. In the structural lows of the Sergipe Basin, and in localized portions of the northern and equatorial Brazilian margin, deep-water biota yield a diverse, diagnostic assemblage of hedbergellids, ticinellids, and globigerinelloids (Koutsoukos & Bengtson, 1997).
A detailed study on the taxonomic composition, diversity, abundance and size of the PF and associated fauna in cores of the Gloria 1 and Cayo Coco 2 wells was carried out. The results were compared with the standard distribution of the microfauna related to the decrease of oxygen found in northeastern Brazil, Sergipe Basin (Mello et al., 1989; Koutsoukos et al., 1991). Strong similarities were observed, and therefore the depletion of oxygen in the water column and an estimation of a widespread oxygen minimum zone in the Cuban wells were established.
Thus, in lower Aptian marine sections of the North Atlantic, central Tethys (Umbria, central Italy) and western Tethys (Cuban continental margin) an apparently global, climatic-eustatic, dysoxic-anoxic event ("Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a") is recorded. As were postulated by Koutsoukos et al. (1997), that event, which was associated with a sea-level highstand and extensive deposition of organic-rich black shales, appears to be coeval or slightly earlier with the first marine ingressions in the southeastern Brazilian margin. The consideration that the first marine incursions came from the north is in accordance with biostratigraphic evidences in the Sergipe basin.
The facies changes and consequently the different palaeoenvironmental settings occurring during the Aptian transgression were responsible for the composition of the biotopes, many of them deep-water dwellers. The organic-rich black shales are proven or potential source rocks in Cuba.
Conclusions
- The Aptian represents a period of an important regional marine transgression.
- In Cuba-Bahamas as a result of the relative sea-level rise and a gradually tectonic subsidence a first backstepping of the platform took place.
- Regional comparisons with coeval events in Southeastern Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas and Northern South Atlantic were reviewed.
- The organic-rich black shales are proven source rocks associated to the Aptian transgression.
