APTIAN-ALBIAN PALYNOLOGY AND PALYNOFACIES OF THE SERGIPE BASIN, NORTHEASTERN, BRAZIL: SYSTEMATICS, BIOSTRATIGRAPHY AND PALAEOECOLOGY
Marcelo de Araujo Carvalho
The project consists of a palaeoenvironmental and biostratigraphic study of the Aptian-Albian sequence of the Sergipe Basin, based on palynology and palynofacies analysis.
The palynological zonation of the Sergipe Basin has been greatly improved since the beginning of Petrobras exploratory activities. However, there is still need for detailed palynostratigraphy of manly dinoflagellates, identification of palynofacies and paleoecological analysis.
The aim of the proposed research project is to carry out palynological investigations with the following purposes: taxonomic study and photomicrographic record of stratigraphically diagnostic palynomorphs, in particular the dinoflagellates; palynological kerogen classification, to support the identification of the palynofacies; refined integrated study of the palynological biozonal schemes with the foraminiferae, ostracode and ammonite zonation for the Aptian-Albian (Sergipe Basin); palaeoecological analysis and interpretation, to support the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental evolution of the basin, based on palynomorphs.
The project was carried out as a PhD thesis in Heidelberg. It was finished in July 2001 and is now available online in pdf.format:
