The Poty Quarry is located in the Pernambuco-Paraíba Basin, approximately 20 km north of the city of Recife, Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil. It displays an exceptional palaeontological record with good exposures of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary. The quarry has been the subject of micropalaeontological studies and  discussions about the extinction at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary as well as about its chronostratigraphic position. Until today no detailed work has been done on the ostracodes of the  basin. Previous micropaleontological studies of this section have been carried out by Tinoco (1967, 1976), Stinnesbeck et al. (1989, 1991, 1996), Albertão et al. (1994) and Koutsoukos (1994, 1995,1996).
The research project on the Poty Quarry was initiated in April 1996. The aim of the proposed research project is to carry out a set of micropaleontological investigations for the following purposes: Taxonomic study, refined biostratigraphical characterization, integration with ammonite and Foraminiferida data, to delineate the general palaeo-environmental distribution and stable isotope studies of ostracoda shell.
The research is being done as a Ph.D. project at the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology of the University of Heidelberg, under the supervision of Dr. Peter Bengtson and Dr. Eduardo A. M. Koutsoukos.
